01/11/2010 – Alexander (Alex) Bayliss, aged 12, from Longlevens, Gloucester, has had his greatest wish to meet Steven Gerrard and the Liverpool team granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
In 1999, Alex was diagnosed with a brain tumour. In order to battle the life threatening condition, he has undergone intensive chemotherapy treatment. As a result, sports fanatic Alex has missed out on lots of fun, including playing his favourite sports, which are football and rugby. Alex’s mum Toni said: “This is his fourth course of chemotherapy and, because of his age, Alex is finding it harder this time. He can now see what he is missing out on. He can’t always do what his friends are doing, which makes him sad.”
Despite these difficulties, Toni told Starlight: “Alex is very outgoing and loves talking to everyone he meets and making friends. He is very positive and enjoys life, living in the moment.”
Following in the footsteps of his dad Craig, Alex has supported Liverpool from a young age. When he was referred to Starlight, he knew immediately that his once in a lifetime wish would be to meet Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and the rest of the Liverpool team. Alex said: “These are my heroes and it would be a dream come true.” Toni said: “This wish would be a fantastic dream realised for Alex, which will help him get through his treatment. Alex is Liverpool mad and aspires to be like Steven Gerrard – if he got to meet his hero he would be so happy!”
Starlight organised for Alex and dad Craig to travel to Liverpool to join a training day at the club’s homeground. After watching the team train, Alex was whisked back stage where he was able to meet the whole team including his ultimate football hero Steven Gerrard and have photos with every player.
Alex’s dad Craig said: “It really was dream come true for Alex. It was enough to just be there watching them train but to meet them all simply blew us away. It was absolutely brilliant. We will never forget the day and I can’t thank Starlight enough for the opportunity.”
Alex said: “It was amazing. I have supported Liverpool since I was five or six years old so to meet Steven Gerrard and watch the team train was incredible!”
