Billy strikes gold as he meets football hero Wayne Rooney

Billy with Wayne Rooney

Billy with Wayne Rooney07/01/2011 – Fifteen year old William (Billy) Curnock from Clevedon, Somerset, has had his dearest wish to meet Wayne Rooney granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Billy was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic immune system, just over a year ago. After a year of gruelling chemotherapy and hospital visits he is thankfully returning back to health. It was his love of football, and more specifically his favourite team Manchester United, that got him through his time in hospital. He spends all his time watching matches with his brother and loves to see his hero, Wayne Rooney, play.

Starlight Children’s Foundation, a national charity which brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children through once-in-a-lifetime wishes and hospital entertainment, arranged for Billy to be allowed special access to the filming of the final episode of Street Striker. Street Striker is a programme hosted by Wayne Rooney where young football talents pit their skills against each other on various football tasks to battle it out to become Wayne’s chosen number one. Billy is a fan of the programme and so it was a very special treat for him to see it being filmed. He was given a VIP tour of the set and met the finalists, who were very friendly, and he was then taken for a personal meeting with his hero, Wayne Rooney.

Billy described the trip as “the best two days of his life” and footballing legend Wayne Rooney, said: “It is always great to meet young football supporters and it was a real pleasure to meet Billy and help grant his Starlight wish – he has clearly been very brave during an extremely tough time and he is a very inspirational young lad.”
