Brave Jason takes to the water in St Lucia with Starlight

Jason Monero, aged 15, from Forest Gate in London, has had his wish to go to St Lucia granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

The teenager, who lost his sight in 2006 after major surgery to treat a brain tumour, uses a wheelchair because without he becomes easily tired and has difficulty walking.  Despite the extraordinary challenges that Jason has had to overcome, his mum Eileen describes Jason as “very strong willed” and says that where possible he will try to get around without the wheelchair.

Jason and his family visited St Lucia when he was two years old and as he has grown up he has always longed to return.  When Jason was referred to Starlight, he said that it would be his dream to revisit the tropical island paradise and to see his relatives who live there.

Mum Eileen told Starlight, “It would mean a lot to Jason and to us if his wish was granted – as an only child, Jason has been feeling a bit lonely since his illness.  It would make us very happy to see him smile and talk about something he dreamt of coming true.”
Starlight arranged the ten night break on the island in the luxury Coconut Bay Resort and Spa for Jason and parents Eileen and Roy.  Before his illness, Jason was a very confident swimmer who belonged to a regular swimming club, but he had not swum since he lost his sight and the holiday provided the teenager the perfect opportunity to get back into the water.
Jason “had a wonderful time” according to mum Eileen.  “He was able to swim in the sea and in the pools and, having loved swimming so much, it really helped him to get his confidence back.  It made him so happy to see his relatives, who he hasn’t seen since he was six and it was very special for them also as they have been so worried about him.
“His illness has been really hard for the family and it was really wonderful for us to get away and spend time together.  Thank you Starlight for a magical holiday and some wonderful memories!”
