16/09/2010 – With all of their friends back at school, September can be a gloomy time for children who are stuck in hospital so to bring them some much needed fun and distraction, Starlight Children’s Foundation is providing parties in children’s wards across the country next week.
The charity, which provides entertainment to over 500,000 children in hospitals and hospices each year, is supporting National Play in Hospital Week. The week long initiative, which is organised by National Association of Hospital Play Staff, aims to promote the value of play for sick children and young people in hospitals throughout the UK.
To support the week, Starlight is funding over 50 hospital parties across the UK. It will provide hospitals and hospices with everything thing they need for a party, including goody bags packed with treats for every child, decorations and party packs. Starlight will also provide funding for food and entertainment, such as magicians, theatre groups and face painters.
Catrina Fleming, Play Specialist at Royal London Hospital, said: “It can be difficult to get children that are in pain and are feeling anxious to engage with their treatment and, with some fun and distraction, they are much more likely to respond positively. We are really looking forward to the party as it will be a great way for the children to have some fun and to socialise with others on the ward.
“We really value the work that Starlight does to cheer the lives of sick children and are delighted that we are able to celebrate National Play in Hospital Week with a Starlight party.”

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.
Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
