Christmas comes early for brave William

William with Father Christmas

William with Father Christmas10/12/2010 – It may only be the beginning of December but Father Christmas has already visited one young Croydon local. Last week, William Milne, who is six years old, had his wish for a very special puppy granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation.

William has had many battles to fight since he was born prematurely, including needing oxygen for 15 months, severe reflux that caused lung damage, intestinal failure, a small bowel transplant, mild cerebral palsy, diabetes, Asperger’s syndrome and an undiagnosed genetic disorder. Overall William has had 41 operations, 10 of which have been major, during his childhood. He has to have daily physiotherapy, injections and blood tests.

When William was first referred to Starlight, he wished to meet Santa in his house in Lapland. However, William has sadly been too unwell to take a trip abroad. William then asked Starlight for a special puppy. The puppy, which has been named Oliver by William, will be trained to help the little boy meet his daily physical challenges and help him to cope with the social anxieties caused by his asperger’s syndrome. Oliver the puppy will also be a fantastic friend and will help William with his condition.

As he was unable to go to Lapland, Starlight also sent him and his family to Lapland UK, where William was able to ice skate for the first time ever with special equipment, stroke the reindeer, make toys with the elves and meet Father Christmas.

ABOUT STARLIGHT
Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.

Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.

You can make a donation online or by calling us on 020 7262 2881. For every £1 you donate, Starlight can assure you that 91p goes towards helping very ill children. To refer a child for a wish, simply complete our wish referral form.
