23/05/2011 – Six year old Charlie Wright from Birmingham has had his dearest wish to go to Disneyland Paris granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
In 2005, Charlie was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy, which primarily affects the legs, and as a result he uses a wheelchair. Despite the difficulties that Charlie faces on a daily basis, his mum Joanne describes her son as “a very sociable and happy little boy, who adores meeting characters and having hugs. He is always smiling and works hard to do the best he can at all things”.
When Charlie was referred to Starlight for a once-in-a-lifetime wish, he sent in a picture of him and Mickey Mouse and asked to be able to fulfil his dream of meeting his favourite Disney characters. Starlight organised for Charlie to travel with his older brother George (8) and his parents Gary and Joanne, to the Paris resort. The family stayed in the theme park’s Sequoia Lodge, which is a luxury hotel entirely themed on America’s National Parks and overlooking Lake Disney.
Charlie and his family were able to enjoy all the treats and excitements of the world famous Disney resort, while meeting their favourite characters, such as Goofy, Pinocchio, Princess Belle and Winnie the Pooh’s Rabbit.
After the wish, Joanne wrote to Starlight and said: “We all had an amazing time and it truly was a dream come true for Charlie as well as his brother George, myself and their daddy. All the arrangements put in place by Starlight meant that we had no worries or concerns and the whole trip ran so smoothly and easily. You really wouldn’t believe how amazing it is for a family in our situation to all be relaxed and enjoying time together without a concern.
“I will be eternally grateful to Starlight for your amazing gift to me and my family – it makes such a difference to discuss a positive event for a change. Starlight is a wonderful organisation! We still haven’t come back to earth yet and Charlie just can’t stop smiling and talking to everyone about his visit. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
