Disneyland Paris is a dream come true for Katie

09/11/2010 – Katie Krzyzanowski, aged 12, from Yeovil in Somerset, has had her greatest wish to visit Disneyland Paris with her family granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Katie was diagnosed as a baby with Neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder that both Katie’s dad and sister also have. As a result of her NF, at the age of four Katie was then diagnosed with scoliosis – a condition in which the spine is curved. Katie has had nine operations to correct the problem since she was just five years old. Mum Julie explains the difficulties Katie has had to face during her childhood, saying: “Due to the nature of her problems she has never been able to do any sport, to run, to jump, or to join in the fun on holidays.”

Julie describes her daughter as “a very happy child, who mainly likes to colour and do arty stuff.” Katie always told her family that she wanted to go on holiday to Disneyland Paris when she was better and, with her spine fixed for the moment following her numerous operations, Katie was referred to Starlight by the paediatric team that care for her at Yeovil District Hospital. With their help, Starlight was able to make Katie’s dreams of Disneyland Paris come true.

The charity took Katie, parents Julie and Paul, and sister Holly-Ann to the Disney-themed resort where they stayed in the luxury Sequoia Lodge, which overlooks Lake Disney, and could enjoy the park’s sights and rides during the day.

On their return home, Julie told Starlight: “It really was a dream come true for Katie. I asked her what her favourite bit was and she said ‘all of it – just being there!’ She has been through a lot growing up and it was lovely to give her a very special and much deserved treat – thank you Starlight and thank you to the Paediatric team at Yeovil District Hospital who have provided such great support.”
