18/10/2010 – Edward, aged 5, from Horsham in West Sussex, has had his wish of a Mamma Mia holiday to Greece granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
Diagnosed in 2007 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, Edward has spent much of the last three years undergoing intensive treatment for his condition. His mum, Genevieve, told Starlight that her son is “an incredibly bright boy that digests everything that happens to him, which has made growing up with leukaemia both easy and difficult. Easy because he understands what is happening but difficult because he is very aware that life is so much harder for him.”
Edward, who has, according to Genevieve, “submersed himself in space, science and the natural world as a way of hiding from all the bad things that have happened to him”, wished to go on a beach holiday to Greece. Genevieve said: “For Edward, it would mean his family escaping together from reality to spend quality time with him – he loves the beach and the sun and always says he can’t wait to go away again like we used to. He goes through so much that just to see him smile and laugh would mean so much to us.”
Starlight organised for Edward, his mum and his grandmother to go to the Greek island of Skopelos in the western Aegean sea. Edward was particularly keen to visit this island, which is best known from one of his favourite films, Mamma Mia, and is home to the Agios Ioannis Chapel, where the wedding procession in the movie was filmed. Edward and his family had a seven day break on the island, enjoying fishing, boat trips to see dolphins in the sparkling blue sea and the climb up the ‘Mamma Mia steps’ in radiant sunshine.
After the trip, Genevieve said: “I want to thank Starlight from the bottom of my heart for such a lovely wish for Edward. He had a wonderful time and even met some new friends. It really was such a treat for him. I don’t think he will ever forget it. The whole holiday was fabulous and the hotel was brilliant. It was so amazing for us to see him smiling again.”
