Holly gets the Starlight treatment in Disneyland Paris

28/10/2010 – Holly Golborne, aged 9, has had her wish of a lifetime to go to Disneyland Paris with her family granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Diagnosed in the first year of her life with dystonic cerebral palsy, Holly has very limited voluntary control of movement. She has no fine and limited gross motor skills, which means that she cannot walk, talk or hold a pencil and she requires assistance to perform all physical activities. Despite these challenges, Holly’s mum Liz says that her daughter is “in every other sense, certainly like any able bodied little girl. She is intelligent, independently minded and she has a fantastic sense of humour.”

Holly’s Starlight wish was to go on holiday with her family to Disneyland Paris. The charity arranged a three day trip to Disneyland Paris in the resort’s luxury Sequoia Lodge, a mountain lodge themed hotel inspired by America’s National Parks. Holly was able to meet all of her favourite Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse, the Chipmunks and Pinocchio. Holly was also able to swim with her family, an activity which she loves.

Mum Liz said: “We had such a lovely time. Holly loved the whole lot and she adored swimming and meeting the Disney characters. It was a very special break for us – thank you Starlight for making it happen!”

Earlier this year, Holly’s local community and Stars Foundation for Cerebral Palsy helped the little girl to get an Eye Gaze Computer. The technology provides Holly with excellent independent access to a wealth of educational and leisure activities with just her eyes, enabling her to enjoy school lessons, play games and keep in touch with her friends. Mum Liz began fundraising and with the help of some wonderful support from the community and Stars Foundation, Holly was able to get the special computer system, which has made an enormous difference to her life.

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.

Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.

You can make a donation online or by calling us on 020 7262 2881. For every £1 you donate, Starlight can assure you that 91p goes towards helping very ill children. To refer a child for a wish, simply complete our wish referral form.
