26/07/2011 – Seventeen year old James Wells from Dibden Purlieu, near Southampton, has had his wish to meet some of his golfing idols at the Open Golf Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
Golf fanatic James was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in November 2010. The condition, which is a form of blood cancer, has meant that James has had to endure a gruelling course of chemotherapy treatment and spend a lot of time away the golf course, which is his absolute passion.
When he was referred to Starlight for a once-in-a-lifetime wish by CLIC Sargent, James told the charity that since diagnosis he has had to spend a lot of time in hospital having treatment, which has completely changed his life. He said, “The main thing I like to do is play golf. I was playing 4 or 5 times a week and I am really missing it.”
The teenager, whose mother Louise says “lives and breathes golf”, hopes to play as a professional in America when he is older and says that being unable to play because of his condition was worse than chemotherapy!
James wished to meet some of his golfing heroes at the Open Golf Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club and Starlight arranged for him to meet stars Lee Westwood, Rory Mcllroy and Paul Lawrie at the world famous tournament.
James’ mother Louise said, “We are able to provide James with most of the things that he wants and needs, but meeting his idols is something we would never have been able to do for him. James has more treatment ahead of him but for a few days life wasn’t just about this. Seeing him with a smile on his face was a fantastic thing for us to see.”
Lee Westwood said, “It is always a pleasure to meet the bright young stars of the future, but it was particularly great to talk to James who, despite all that he has been through, is an inspiration to us all with his determination to succeed.”
