Amy Handley, aged 15, from Biggin Hill in Kent, has had her wish to go to Alton Towers with her family granted by the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses, Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Having spent most of her childhood battling against severe illness from a condition called combined immunodeficiency, Amy has endured endless hospital visits and treatment and the preparation for a bone marrow transplant meant that last year she spent much of her time in hospital and away from school and her friends.
Despite these difficulties, mum Rachel says her daughter has been remarkably courageous. “Amy has coped fantastically well, managing to keep upbeat and positive over the years. She is a smart, conscientious and determined young lady, who tries to make the most out of life. Unfortunately, her ongoing illness has meant that she has missed out on some childhood fun and experiences.”
Having been introduced to Starlight, there was little doubt in Amy’s mind as to what her greatest wish would be. Describing herself as a thrill-seeker, a trip to Alton Towers with her family was the obvious adventure. Starlight organised for Amy, parents Rachel and Charles, and little sister and brother Sophie and Andrew to stay at the Alton Towers Hotel for four days with all inclusive fast track passes to the adventure and water parks.
Mum Rachel said of the trip: “It was absolutely great and we would never have been able to do it in such style without Starlight’s help. Having the fast track passes meant that Amy could make the very most out of our visit and go on her favourite rides over and over again if she wished.
“Amy’s illness has affected not only her but our entire family and it was wonderful to forget it all for a few days and have some fun together.”
Amy is making good progress and is now determined to catch-up at school and achieve outstanding results so she can study at university.

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.
Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
