Matt’s bedroom gets the Starlight treatment

Matt-Lee15/10/2010 – Matt Lee, aged 15, from Carterton, has been given a complete bedroom makeover by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

The football-mad teen, who was diagnosed in 2007 with leukaemia, has been through an extensive treatment programme, which has meant that he has missed out on plenty of fun with friends and two brothers, Adam and Joshua.

When parents Sharon and Darren heard about Starlight and asked Matt what his once in a lifetime wish would be, he immediately asked for a complete bedroom makeover so that his friends could come to stay and he would be able to have his own space to play computer games.

Mum Sharon said: “Since he was diagnosed and treatment started, Matt has become much quieter and not being able to attend school regularly has really knocked his confidence. I really believe a new bedroom would go some way to giving him his confidence back and that he would begin to socialise again with his friends.”

Matt described his dream bedroom as “cool but grown-up” and Starlight immediately set about creating exactly that for him. The charity organised a cinema outing for Matt, along with his brothers and dad, to give the team of Starlight volunteers an opportunity to transform Matt’s bedroom. The makeover included a new bed, bedroom furniture and curtains, a Playstation, signed football shirts and even a signed football boot from Matt’s football hero Steven Gerrard.

Matt’s mum said of the makeover: “He loves it and it’s exactly what he wanted – a really nice space where he can relax and spend time with his friends. The football boot from Steven Gerrard is a favourite and I think he is really excited about getting his friends over to show it off to them. Thank you Starlight for making his wish come true!”
