07/01/2011 – Ten year old Michael McRoberts from Newtonabbey, County Antrim has had his dearest wish to meet Wayne Rooney granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
Michael struggles with limited mobility as he has a severe condition called Arthrogryposis. He is confined to an electric wheelchair and his mother told Starlight that, as a result of his condition, he is not able to play with friends or leave the house much. Manchester United is his passion and is what he lives for – his bedroom is awash with the club’s colours and merchandise.
Starlight Children’s Foundation, a national charity which brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children through once-in-a-lifetime wishes and hospital entertainment, arranged for Michael to be allowed special access to the filming of the final episode of Street Striker. Street Striker is a programme hosted by Wayne Rooney where young football talents pit their skills against each other on various football tasks to battle it out to become Wayne’s chosen number one.
Michael is a fan of the programme and so it was a very special treat for him to see it being filmed. His mother kept it a surprise that he was meeting Wayne Rooney but when he arrived at the Street Striker set and saw the posters he could not stop chanting his name in excitement. Despite his non-stop chatter beforehand, he was at a loss for words when he met his hero.
Footballing legend Wayne Rooney, said: “It was a real honour to meet Michael, who is a really great boy and, with all the challenges he has to overcome, is a real inspiration to us all.”

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.
Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
You can make a donation online or by calling us on 020 7262 2881. For every £1 you donate, Starlight can assure you that 91p goes towards helping very ill children. To refer a child for a wish, simply complete our wish referral form.
