Ralph has a whale of a time in Nova Scotia!

27/10/2010 – Ralph Brady, aged 12, from Hemel Hempstead, has had his wish to go on holiday to Nova Scotia in Canada granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

In 2009, Ralph was diagnosed with juvenile nasoppharyngeal angiofibroma, a form of cancer that affects the nasal cavity. As a result of his condition, Ralph has undergone an intense course of radiotherapy treatment and requires scans every three months. Although he is back at school which he loves, he is not yet able to do a full week. Ralph’s mum, Noreen, told Starlight: “He is very aware of his illness, which holds him back a little.”

When Ralph was referred to Starlight for a once in a lifetime wish, his mum said that he had no idea what to choose. Noreen said: “He does not complain very much. He thinks that the wish is fantastic but does not really believe that someone will give him something he wants for no reason. He has never played on his illness or treatment – he just gets on with things as best as he can.”

Two years ago Ralph and his family went to Nova Scotia in Canada and, Noreen told Starlight: “Ralph loved it – he didn’t want to come home, which is why he asked Starlight for a holiday there.” The charity organised for the family to spend a week in the Canadian province, and Ralph, parents Noel and Noreen and sister Grainne enjoyed spending time on the beach, whale watching and searching for gold.

“It was really fantastic – Ralph loved every bit of it and none of us wanted to leave. A while ago we were thinking about going to live out there but because of Ralph’s illness we were unable to. For us to go on holiday to a place we all love was really special, particularly after everything Ralph has been through,” Noreen said.

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.

Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.

You can make a donation online or by calling us on 020 7262 2881. For every £1 you donate, Starlight can assure you that 91p goes towards helping very ill children. To refer a child for a wish, simply complete our wish referral form.
