05/10/2010 – Alexander Greig, aged 16, from Friern Barnet in London, has had his greatest wish to meet Rihanna granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
Diagnosed at two years old with cystic fibrosis, a life shortening condition that affects all the organs of the body, especially the lungs and breathing, Alexander has missed out on many opportunities during his childhood and requires daily medication and physiotherapy to ease the symptoms of his illness. More recently he was also diagnosed with another genetic illness, muscular dystrophy (FHSD) which affects the muscles in his upper body.
Having heard about Starlight through the medical staff looking after Alexander at Great Ormond Street Hospital, mum Lynnette contacted Starlight to see whether the charity could make her son’s wish of a lifetime come true. Alexander, who is a long-standing fan of Rihanna, was desperate to meet the star in person and, keen to bring him a taste of the glitz and glamour of stardom, Starlight secretly organised for Alexander to meet the singer in New York.
Alexander and Lynnette travelled to New York from London, where they were whisked around the buzzing city in a limo and treated to a three night stay in the luxury Radisson Lexington Hotel, located in the heart of Manhattan’s fashionable East Side near Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations. Alexander’s special trip was made complete by tickets to Rihanna’s Last Girl On Earth 2010 Tour concert at the exclusive Jones Beach Theatre, where Alexander was able to meet the star before her show.
Alexander’s mum told Starlight: “The whole trip was a dream come true. Alexander is a massive fan of Rihanna and her concert was fabulous. We couldn’t believe that he got to meet her in person – she was so lovely to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Alexander says that it was the best time of his life and, after everything that he has been through, I can’t thank Starlight and all its supporters enough for giving us such a special memory.”

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.
Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
