Shooting challenge at Highclere Castle raises £1.5m

The Floaters - L to R - Bob Battaglia, Haggis Hartman, Dan Reynolds, John Williams

20/06/2011 – The ninth Starlight Shooting Challenge, which was hosted by The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon at their beautiful Berkshire estate, Highclere, last week, brought the total raised over the nine years to a tremendous £1.5m for Starlight Children’s Foundation.

The guests, including seasoned Starlight supporters hedge fund manager Crispin Odey and this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winning trainer Nicky Henderson, enjoyed a day of serious sport in stunning surroundings, before participating in the charity auction.

The overall winning team of the day was John Simpson’s team, The Floaters. Team members were Bob Battaglia, Haggis Hartman, Dan Reynolds and John Williams.

The auction, which included a 300 bird day shoot at Great Bradley on Exmoor, kindly donated by John Simpson, was conducted by Sotheby’s auctioneer Lord (Harry) Dalmeny. During the auction, Ron Randall, of the event’s lead sponsor Blue Waters Hotel in Antigua, secured the much sought after lot of a walk-on part in the next series of hit TV series Downton Abbey.

With the funds raised, Starlight will be able to grant the once-in-a-lifetime wishes of seriously and terminally ill children and bring fun and laughter to over half a million poorly children in wards across the country with its programme of hospital and hospice entertainment.
