Sky high on the London Eye

Connor on his London Eye flight

09/05/2011 – Nine year old Connor Griffith, from Hoghton near Preston in Lancashire, has had his dearest wish, to spend a weekend seeing the sights in London, granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.

Connor on his London Eye flightConnor has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a severe muscle wasting disease occurring in boys. The life shortening condition is a progressive disease involving deterioration of mobility.

When Connor was referred to Starlight for a once-in-a-lifetime wish, his mum Alison told Starlight that “he loves history, especially the Egyptians, and likes to know how things work, such as mobile phones, computers and the human body”, and so a trip to the Natural History Museum was an obvious choice for this young historian!

The charity suggested that the trip to London should include some of the capital city’s other sights and Connor said that he would also like to visit world famous toy store Hamleys and take a flight on the London Eye. Mum Alison joked that he was particularly keen to ride on the London Eye as “he would love to see me on it as I hate heights!”

Alison said: “The trip would give us good quality family time together and a weekend of fun for Connor – it would also give us time away to forget our worries.”

To ensure that Connor and his family could travel in style, a limosine took them from sight to sight and to the Rainforest Café, a tropical forest-themed restaurant in the heart of the West End.

After the trip, Alison told Starlight: “Thank you so much for making Connor’s wish come true – we all had a fantastic time in London. Connor’s favourite part was going in the limo and the London Eye was amazing! He also loved his shopping trip in Hamleys and has spent a lot of time playing with his train set and making some gruesome experiments with his science kit! A wish means so much for families to just escape the day to day thoughts of your child having a terminal illness – thank you Starlight”.
