Starlight brings some Christmas sparkle to the UK’s hospitals

Starlight Christmas panto 2010

Starlight Christmas panto 201025/11/2010 – This Christmas, children’s charity Starlight will be staging a series of pantomimes and throwing parties to help bring a little festive sparkle into the lives of children, their families and staff on children’s wards in hospitals and hospices up and down the country.

The panto season started in London at Whipps Cross University Hospital on 22 November and features a wonderful performance of Sleeping Beauty. The production will tour around the UK, visiting 80 hospitals over a seven week period.

Produced exclusively for Starlight by interactive theatre group The Panto Company, sick children and their families will be able to enjoy the magic and excitement of Sleeping Beauty this Christmas from the safety of the hospital ward.

Like their friends, they will also have the opportunity to join in with Christmas carols and games at parties, recreating some of the fun of Christmas with their families around them. This year, Starlight’s programme of Christmas pantos and parties has been supported by American Express.

A senior play specialist from a leading London hospital, Catherine Gardner at University College Hospital said: “Play really does help to distract sick children from their illness and treatment and Christmas is the time of year when kids are most mindful of what they are missing out on. The previous pantos and parties provided by the charity have been fantastic and we look forward to seeing our ward filled with smiling faces once again this Christmas thanks to Starlight.”

Starlight brightens the lives of over half a million sick children in the UK each year and Christmas is a particularly busy time for the charity as it brings some much-needed fun, laughter and distraction to children that will spend Christmas in hospital and away from home.

ABOUT STARLIGHT
Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.

Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.

You can make a donation online or by calling us on 020 7262 2881. For every £1 you donate, Starlight can assure you that 91p goes towards helping very ill children. To refer a child for a wish, simply complete our wish referral form.
