Charlie Leach and motorsports star Oli Webb at Silverstone24/08/11 – On Sunday 21st August, a group of seriously ill children had a dream day out at the legendary Silverstone circuit with Starlight Children’s Foundation, British racing driver Oli Webb and the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC).

Oli’s first involvement with Starlight was during a charity track day organised by the BRDC and, after spending a day with the inspirational group of youngsters, 20 year old Webb was so moved that he contacted Starlight to offer a group of poorly children the full VIP treatment at Silverstone as guests of the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC).

One young person that enjoyed the day was 17 year old Charlie from Witney in Oxfordshire. Earlier this year, Charlie was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Liposarcoma.  To fight the disease, he is having intensive radiotherapy treatment and is due to undergo major surgery this week to remove the tumour.

Charlie dreams of becoming a motorsport engineer and work for a Formula One team.  He told the charity, which is the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious illnesses, “There was never any doubt in my mind what I wanted to do when I left school and I have put every effort into my work to get in to motorsport at college”.

Charlie wishes to go to a Formula One Grand Prix and meet Lewis Hamilton and, while the team at Starlight works to make his wish come true, they were able to invite him to a very special day at Silverstone with the help of Oli and the BRDC.

Together with the other Starlight families, Charlie and his parents Sarah and David had the opportunity to experience first-hand the buzz ahead of the World Series by Renault race with a grid walk on the legendary track.  They were also invited in to the prestigious BRDC Clubhouse, part of the impressive new Silverstone Wing pit and paddock complex, to watch Webb line up in his PONS Racing Formula Renault 3.5 racer.

Afterwards Oli, who gained valuable championship points at the event, said, “Having first encountered Starlight at a charity event, I was really excited to be able to invite a group of very deserving kids to join us at Silverstone for a real taste of what life is really like for a motor racing driver.

“Clearly, they have all been through a lot and I was really struck by their determination to succeed and their dedication to the motor sporting industry – it was really inspirational to see such commitment in the face of adversity.”
