19/07/2011 – Fourteen-year-old Sasha Line from Southampton has had her dearest wish for a bedroom makeover granted by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the UK’s leading wish granting charity for children with serious and terminal illnesses.
The teenager, who loves animals, swimming and Tracy Beaker, suffers from a rare condition called Otocephaly Disgnathia, which means that she has a very small lower jaw and difficulty breathing. As a result of her condition, Sasha has no voicebox and requires a gastrostomy to eat and a tracheotomy to breathe.
Her mum Tracy told Starlight that, because of her illness, Sasha is only able to do limited exercise and has to spend a lot of time in bed. When she was asked by Starlight to choose her once-in-a-lifetime wish, Sasha said she would like her bedroom to be redecorated as she spends so much time there.
Sasha wrote to the charity and said, “I would like my room redecorated because, although it looks nice at the moment, I think it’s a bit boring and it’s not really my colour!” Her mum Tracy added, “This wish would mean the world to not only Sasha but the whole family as an opportunity to create something to hold on to and reflect upon during harder times to come.”
To fulfil Sasha’s dream, Starlight organised for a complete bedroom makeover, which included a new bed, linens and throw, blinds, and lots of gorgeous accessories, such as cushions, lamps and a funky wall clock to make her room as pretty and comfortable as possible. The charity also arranged for her room to be repainted in her favourite colour and the Southampton branch of Ikea kindly donated a BESTA storage unit that Sasha had particularly asked for as it would hide all her medical equipment and even match her new colour scheme!
Sasha’s mum Tracy said, “I can’t express my gratitude enough for what Starlight has done. Thanks really don’t seem enough.”

Starlight grants a once-in-a-lifetime wish for seriously and terminally ill children, restoring the magic and fun of childhood and giving the whole family happy memories to share, whatever the future holds.
Starlight also creates entertainment in every hospital and hospice throughout the UK. Sick children go to Starlight parties, laugh their way through pantomimes, go out on Starlight Escapes, play games and watch films on the Starlight Fun Centre, and enjoy the toys and puzzles of the Starlight Distraction Box. Happy children respond better to treatment and Starlight helps children to forget about their illness and simply have a bit of fun.
