Starlight racing demon Peter beats David Coulthard

Christmas comes early for children with serious illnesses at Starlight’s Winter Grand Prix Party

04/12/2010 – Sixty very poorly children got an early Christmas treat at a Grand Prix tea party hosted by Starlight Children’s Foundation at Bluebird Restaurant in London this afternoon. The youngsters, who are all Formula 1 fans, were able to test out the driving seats of seven Formula 1 cars and enjoy an afternoon of Grand Prix themed fun and entertainment with F1 star David Coulthard.

During the event, Peter Griffin, aged 12, took on thirteen times Grand Prix winner David Couthard on a giant Scalextric track… and won. Peter has suffered from Wilm’s tumour, which is a form of kidney cancer. The kidney was removed and Peter  then underwent three years of intensive chempotherapy treatment to battle the disease. Starlight, which grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes for children with serious and terminal illnesses, took F1 fanatic and accomplished karting driver Peter to watch the Grand Prix in Monaco and his parents believe that it was the wish coupled with his competitive spirirt that helped Peter to fight the illness.

David Coulthard said: “I take my Scalextric racing pretty seriously but I was no match for Peter this afternoon. It was fantastic to meet him – he is a very determined young man who has shown immense bravery to beat his very serious illness. He is a real inspiration.”
