Throughout the year Starlight organise a series of Escapes to give families the chance to enjoy a break from hospital and treatment and spend a fun day out together.
On Saturday 9th June, we held our second annual Pirate Escape at the Thames Motor Yacht Club in Hampton Court for 15 seriously ill children and their families.
To enjoy, smile, relax and recognise each day as a family is a precious gift. In a few years, no matter the outcome, we will look back at today as a bright memory for all the family.

The children were kept busy with a host of pirate themed games on the riverbank before a delicious barbecue lunch.
The highlight of the day was a cruise along the Thames when a flotilla of boats took to the river and our young pirates delighted in taking over the helm!
Eight-year-old Roberto is battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and he enjoyed the pirate adventure along with his three brothers and his parents. After the Escape Roberto’s mum Clare told us;
“Having been through such a tough experience and continuing to live in a world where there is no certainty and still lots of treatment to endure – days like today lift our spirits and bring us together as a family. They are a great moment to pause and have time together that isn’t about trips to hospital, needles or bad stuff.
So days like today really are ‘respite days’ – a way in which to escape and feel a million miles away from normal stuff.
To enjoy, smile, relax and recognise each day as a family is a precious gift.
In a few years, no matter the outcome, we will look back at today as a bright memory for all the family.”
