16-year-old performance swimmer Emë from Bath was diagnosed with Langerhans’ Cell Histiocytosis at the end of 2015 when she was 14. Despite regular hospital visits, the passionate swimmer still manages to train five times a week and competes in regional competitions.
Emë told Starlight that her swimming inspiration has always been Gold medalist Olympian Rebecca Adlington and hoped to one day be as successful as her. Emë’s dream recently came true when she had the opportunity to meet her idol, and gain tips and advice over a dinner with Rebecca, at a London’s Brasserie Zedel in Piccadilly. Emë has been on cloud nine since, and regularly wears the ‘swimming-hat’ Rebecca gave her, which attracts a lot of attention and smiles at her training sessions.
One of the hardest factors of remission is rebuilding that confidence back, learning how to love yourself again and being able to accept yourself for who you are. Thanks to Becky I learned to love myself for who I am and to not hate my faults, the fact that she was so down to earth as well as confidence made me want to be more like her. – Emë
