17-year-old James “lives and breathes golf”. However, since being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia last year, he has been too unwell to play – a consequence which, for James, is even worse than chemotherapy.
So, in aid of bringing a smile back to James’ face, Starlight sent him and his family off to The Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club, to meet his idols Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Paul Lawrie. Whilst no doubt the players had some useful tips to offer, they themselves were hugely inspired by James, whose determination, they said, “was an inspiration to us all”.
Although James still has more treatment to undergo, his Mum Louise said that it was incredible for the family to have a day when the focus was on something else entirely: “seeing James with a smile on his face was a fantastic thing for us all.”
