Luke, along with nine other brave Starlight children and their parents, had the most magical and unforgettable experience at the 2010 Monaco Grand Prix.
Thanks to Starlight, Parachute Marketing, Formula One management and all the F1 teams the children enjoyed an incredible VIP trip, with visits to the F1 Paddock and team garages, tickets for the grandstand and – most excitingly – meeting their heroes, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vittal and Monaco GP winner Mark Webber, to name a few!
Luke, aged 15, who is remission from a brain tumour, couldn’t believe his ears when David Croft from Radio 5 interviewed him and broke the news that he would be meeting his favourite driver, Lewis Hamilton.
“It’s like I’m in a dream – I can’t put into words what this weekend has meant to me, it was an absolutely incredible experience and one that shall stay with me for the rest of my life,” Luke said on his return.
Every one of these children face life-threatening illnesses, yet that was all forgotten as they watched Mark Webber win the race on Sunday and continued on to a very special dinner on Sir Richard Branson’s yacht.
One of the fathers commented: “It truly was a fantastic experience and went well beyond any expectations I had prior to the trip. The boys met so many people, both famous and less famous, but all lovely, and now have so many magical memories to cherish.”
Sarah Dawson of Starlight said: “I just can’t thank the whole F1 community enough for everything they have done to make this the trip of a lifetime for these children. Each one of the F1 teams organised something magical, from meetings with their F1 motor racing heroes to behind-the-scenes tours of the pitlanes and garages to invitations to hang out in their exclusive hospitality suites. It was truly magical.”
