Tailored, evidence-based support to improve paediatric services

We take a collaborative and personalised approach with healthcare settings of all kinds and NHS commissioners to understand specific issues, or gaps in services and knowledge to provide targeted resources, training and support to ensure positive outcomes for children and families.

We have worked with NHS Trusts, integrated care boards (ICB) and universities to:

  • Embed youth voice into the movement of children’s services for a large hospital trust
  • Audit a play team with specific outcomes and recommendations for change for a large children’s NHS hospital

Case study

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust wanted to better understand the effectiveness of their play provision.

They commissioned Starlight to conduct a full review. The findings were collated into a full report, offering tailored short, medium, and long-term recommendations.

Starlight conducted a full audit of our play provision through a mix of quantitative and qualitative research. From desk-based analysis of our data, to facilitated discussions with the Play Team, managers, patients and family members, they covered all bases.

Starlight benchmarked us against the new standards (created by a taskforce that was led by Starlight and NHS England), which outline what good play provision in healthcare looks like. We were the first organisation to be assessed against these standards, which gave us a very useful framework.

What I find helpful about the report is that it focuses on how we can have the best impact for children and how we can help them the most. That's the guiding light. Everything we're doing is to improve the impact of play on children's lives and Starlight’s review grounds us back to that.

If there’s a gap in understanding of play within the strategic parts of an organisation it can make it particularly important to have expertise from organisations like Starlight.
