Events and Experiences
At Starlight, we’re passionate about protecting play, both in and out of hospital. We make sure that our services don’t get left at the hospital door, and that families feel supported at all stages of dealing with serious illness.
We hold Starlight Escapes, Days and Breaks throughout the year so children and their families can leave the stresses of hospitals and hospices far behind.
From pirate boating parties and film screenings to flying days and summer fetes, Starlight Escapes are a chance for the families we work with to forget their worries, meet new people and make memories together.
While events such as these are not possible at the minute, we have been working hard throughout lockdown to bring vital connection and fun at a difficult time through our Virtual Escape series. From solving mysteries and magic tricks, to dancing and dares, we are able to bring the joy of our Escape days into homes across the UK.
How they help
When one of the people you love most in the world gets seriously ill, it’s hard to think about anything else. It’s there when you wake up in the morning, when you try to get to sleep at night – and often when you lie awake at night too. At our Starlight Escapes, we do everything we can to take away those worries for a day. It’s a chance for everyone to have fun, press the reset button and find new strength to keep going.
A Starlight Day is a special event which connects families with similar interests. This can be anything from attending a concert to testing out new games together! Alongside our programme of Starlight Escapes, we want to be able to appeal to all children and young people living with serious or life-long conditions through a variety of events, days out and activities so they feel special and connected to the things that make them most happy.
How they help
Starlight Days give families something fun to look forward to, all through the year! When your child is faced with the diagnosis of a serious or life-long illness, you can easily focus on the reality of having to attend hospitals, physios, and appointments to get the medical care you require. We want to make sure that amongst those appointments, we are bringing a smile to the faces of children and young people dealing with this reality through the power of play.
Our Starlight Breaks are reserved for the families who need us the most; those living with complex long-term conditions which extend past hospital. The reality is that these families’ lives revolve around treatment and they often don’t have the time to think or resource to plan a holiday or break for their family to re-connect. That’s where Starlight steps in!
Through a series of regional breaks, we invite a group of families to join us on holiday; from Center Parcs to theme parks! This truly encompasses the meaning of “escape from reality” as Starlight will take care of the boring stuff whilst our families enjoy some quality time together and are able to connect with other Starlight families.
How they help
We create a safe space for families to feel confident to go outside of their comfort zone. We want to make sure that as many of the barriers that prevent families from being able to go on holiday together are removed, to empower those families to do the things they thought they couldn’t, and to protect play for those who need it more than ever.
How to apply
Our services will be open to families that include a child or young person living with a serious illness. Applications are not yet open, but keep checking back: we’ll announce when our application form goes live on our website.
