Animation and prep books launched on what to expect in hospital

Preparing for a hospital visit can feel overwhelming for both children and parents. That’s why Starlight has created an animation, along with colourful, digital and printable Prep Books designed to gently guide children and families through what will happen at their appointment or during their stay.

The animation, supported by the Prep Books, allows children to explore each step of their visit at their own pace, helping to ease anxiety and make the experience feel less daunting.

A journey through appointments

Children can follow a cute character called Esbug through three hospital experiences by reading the Prep Books:

  • Going to hospital – outpatient
  • Going to hospital – inpatient
  • Going to hospital – surgery

The prep books and animation are available on our resources for healthcare professionals page too.

Laura Walsh, Head of Play at Starlight

“Parents and carers don’t need to have all the answers. Our new prep books and animation can support children every step of the way.

“We hope that these fun resources will create a safe space for questions, reassurance, and confidence-building.

“Our research shows that anxiety can build in children if they don’t know what to expect. We want to help them feel empowered, so they are better able to engage with their treatment and experience less trauma from their healthcare.

“Starlight is working hard to ensure play is at the heart of every child’s healthcare experience. These colourful and engaging resources are one way we’re supporting children.”
