New Therapeutic Play Resource Helps Children Navigate Emotions in Hospital

Starlight has launched a new therapeutic play resource designed to support children’s emotional wellbeing during hospital visits and medical treatments.

The new Build & Feel Play Boxes, generously supported by the LEGO Group, are available to healthcare professionals across the UK. They are packed with play-based tools to help children express emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, and build resilience during their healthcare journey.

What’s inside the Build & Feel Play Box?

Each box includes:

  • Starlight activity packs and arts and crafts materials
  • A selection of sensory toys, puzzles and games
  • Starlight Dream Beam plushies
  • LEGO® sets, encouraging creativity and emotional expression

How play supports children’s health and emotional wellbeing

“Our new Build & Feel Play Box is designed to encourage safe and imaginative exploration of feelings, promote emotional regulation, and relaxation. The aim is to reduce anxiety and stress, as well as improve motor skills and problem-solving.

“Children can struggle to verbalise their feelings, especially anger, fear, or sadness. We hope health play professionals will be able to use the LEGO sets and other products to encourage them to explore those feelings, especially if used one to one with play staff or another adult.

“We aim to foster emotional growth, support well-being, and add a playful, creative aspect to children’s health experiences.”

Laura Walsh, Head of Play at Starlight

The LEGO Group’s support for therapeutic play in healthcare

Christian Pau, Vice President and General Manager of the LEGO Group UK and Ireland, and a Starlight Trustee, said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring LEGO bricks to children receiving healthcare across the UK to support them process their emotions and make their experience a little less scary.

“I firmly believe that play connects people of all ages, relieves stress and allows people to explore new possibilities and be creative. We hope the children, and adults who build the LEGO sets with them, enjoy the experience and feel the benefits of building together.”
