Starlight’s Festive Tour brings smiles to children in hospital

Starlight’s Festive Tour has been visiting hospitals across the UK bringing fun and laughter to children in hospital and hospices.

Now in its third year, theatre companies are visiting more than 50 sites throughout December and into January, to bring the joy of Christmas to children who can miss out on so much if they are ill, injured or have life-limiting conditions during this magical season.

They include playful twists on classic stories and brand new shows.

'Lively and uplifting'

May Chu, a senior health play specialist at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said: “Croydon Hospital Play Team were delighted to welcome Starlight charity. Their visit, along with the lively and uplifting Starlight panto tour: Scruff's Christmas Adventure, brought smiles, excitement, and a sense of normality to our young patients with the lovely Mima performing from Little Angel Theatre.”

'Kindness and energy'

May’s colleague Genevieve Dodoo, also a health play specialist on the hospital’s Rainbow Children’s Unit, added: “Their kindness and energy transformed the day for our children and their families, and we are deeply thankful for the joy they shared."

“Bringing this festive tour to life has been an incredible privilege. It means we can give moments of joy, creativity, and comfort to children and families when they need it most. Every smile and laugh the shows spark remind us why this work matters.

“I’m so proud of our team, our partners, and the amazing hospital staff who have made it possible - and a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful theatre companies whose talent is bringing playful magic and connection through their performances.”

Elizabeth Townsend, Starlight’s Service Delivery Manager

Starlight gives special thanks to The Story of Christmas (an annual Christmas charity event which is strongly supported by the property and construction industries and raises money for a range of charities) who supported the tour.

Kev Mounce, Starlight's Head of Trusts and Foundations, said: “The Story of Christmas’ continued support makes a huge difference to the activities we can provide at this special time of year. Their long-standing commitment to play in healthcare is so appreciated by Starlight and all the hospitals we can support thanks to their funding – we could not do it without them.”
